Joining Forces with FATE in Our Commitment to the Agri&Foodtech Sector
Sustainability and food security are increasingly critical challenges. Advances in technology in the food and agriculture sectors, known as foodtech and agritech, have become essential pillars for the future of the planet.
In this context, FATE was founded as an association focused on Europe, aiming to group and represent the Agri&Foodtech sector, of which we have recently become a part.
In a world where food demand is growing exponentially, the food technology (foodtech) and agricultural technology (agritech) sectors are emerging as key players to ensure food security, sustainability, and efficiency throughout the food production chain. These industries, driven by advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology, are transforming the way we grow, distribute, and consume food.
Foodtech focuses on improving food production, distribution, and consumption through technology, covering areas such as the development of protein alternatives, supply chain optimization, and personalized nutrition. Agritech, on the other hand, applies advanced technology to agriculture to make it more productive and sustainable. From using drones to monitor crops to automated irrigation systems that conserve water, these innovations are redefining the field and food industry.
Advances in agritech, for example, have given rise to precision agriculture, allowing farmers to use data and sensors to make more informed decisions, optimizing resources and increasing yields. Foodtech, meanwhile, has fostered innovations in the development of alternative proteins, such as lab-grown meat and plant-based products. These alternatives are not only more sustainable but also provide a response to ethical and environmental issues.
In short, Agri&Foodtech is redefining the concept of food sustainability, offering innovative and efficient solutions to meet the urgent need to produce food responsibly. These technologies not only promote more sustainable farming practices and greater food security but also point toward a future where technology and agriculture collaborate to feed the world without compromising the environment.
FATE: The Association Structuring the Agri&Foodtech Sector
In this context, FATE (Food & Agritech Europe) emerges as the association that brings together Agri&Foodtech startups, companies, organizations, and professionals, of which we recently became a member through artica+i.
This organization, which originated in Spain but aims to integrate across Europe, seeks to promote growth and facilitate collaboration among foodtech companies in Europe, driving innovation and promoting technological solutions that contribute to healthier, more sustainable, ethical, and accessible food for all.
It is a key entity for the agri-food industry, conceived not only as a structuring element for the sector but also to give its members a voice in key decisions and to create a trusted networking environment that facilitates collaborative projects. In addition, it aims to accelerate growth through knowledge transfer, channeling funding, and representing the sector for sustainable development. Its pillars include strategic collaboration, equitable access to resources and opportunities, promoting practices with triple impact (social, environmental, and economic), visibility for the sector, and influencing strategic decision-making.
FATE is supported by ICEX, which hosted the association’s launch event in December 2023. During the event, María Naranjo, Director of the Food Industry at ICEX, emphasized that “the creation of FATE is a clear sign of the consolidation process of the innovative ecosystem of the food industry in Spain. It is essential to have powerful interlocutors who can serve as a reference for corporations, investment funds, and technology centers, both Spanish and international.”
What Are Its Main Objectives?
- Share knowledge to accelerate sector growth.
- Strengthen the technological innovation ecosystem in the agri-food sector.
- Unite, connect, and represent the foodtech industry to foster sustainable development and advocate for the interests of the entire sector.
- Promote effective collaboration between companies, public institutions, and the private sector.
- Facilitate access to resources, opportunities, funds, and partnerships that support the development of all foodtech companies.
- Demonstrate the maturity of our sector and boost its position among the most innovative in Europe.
- Have a voice when defending the industry’s interests in strategic decision-making processes affecting the sector.
Our Role in FATE
In our commitment to strengthening institutional relationships with strategic entities in the agri-food sector, we recently took the step of joining FATE as a collaborating partner.
We thus join its more than 70 members and collaborators to build ties with leading Agri&Foodtech entities of various kinds: other companies, venture capital entities, accelerators, incubators, public administrations, universities, technology institutes, research centers, and more.
This is a strategic alliance for both our Engineering and Innovation Consulting departments. Thanks to our involvement in the association, we can connect with the most cutting-edge technology companies, allowing us to equip our engineering projects with the most advanced technologies. Similarly, we will enhance networking with technology companies, research centers, and other entities to promote potential collaborative R&D+I projects, both nationally and internationally.
In short, our incorporation into FATE is a step forward in strengthening the search for synergies with entities linked to agri-food innovation, as we have been doing for years with other associations such as the Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB), the Wine Technology Platform (PTV), Food for Life-Spain, the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), the Association of Refrigeration Companies and Technologies (AEFYT), and, more recently, with our incorporation into the Galician Food Cluster (CLUSAGA).
Upcoming FATE Member Meeting
On December 12, the ICEX headquarters in Madrid will host the meeting that the association is organizing for all its members and close collaborators to connect, address issues, share resources, and create a collaborative network among the association members.
As collaborating partners, we will be present and actively participate in the presentations of the ongoing working groups, as well as in the “Needs and Leads” session, where each partner will share an opportunity for improvement to try to match needs and technological solutions among FATE members.
The members will make available to the rest of FATE more than 14 digital, physical, and biological technologies currently grouped within the association, including highlights such as Artificial Intelligence, Cellular Agriculture, Precision Fermentation, and 3D Printing, among others.
