artica+i participates in the presentation of the MDI SmalgaeCO2
artica+i has participated in the presentation of a Manifestation of Interest to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), to be included in the National Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience, whose mission is to industrialise a method of carbon footprint offsetting through the cultivation of microalgae in a circular economy model.
This is the SmalgaeCO2 initiative, an R&D&I project with three distinct phases (prototype, validation and industrialisation) that aims to implement a total of 50 intelligent microalgae cultivation modules using bioreactors, distributed across seven autonomous communities, whose objective is to industrialise a method of carbon footprint offsetting through the intelligent and efficient cultivation of microalgae, promoting new biosustainable products through a circular economy model.
Microalgae are a promising source of renewable energy, contribute directly to greater environmental and economic sustainability of certain production processes and have great potential for mitigating CO2 emissions and for wastewater treatment. However, the technology needed to boost their use on an industrial scale is not yet available.
And this is precisely the challenge of SmalgaeCO2: to address a profitable and industrial use of microalgae biomass thanks to the application of new Artificial Intelligence technologies. All this, encouraging a cleaner and circular business model aligned with the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy, “Spain Circular 2030”, as well as with international measures such as the European Green Pact and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
It is estimated that the 50 cultivation plants installed thanks to SmalgaeCO2 will annually sequester 600,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, generating an impact of 300 highly skilled direct jobs, 150 indirect jobs and with a final investment of 216 million euros.
The MDI SmalgaeCO2, proposed by CARINSA Group, has the initial support of 26 entities in the framework of public-private collaboration, of which 11 are knowledge generating entities, including NEUROLOGYCA SCIENCE Y MARKETING S.L, and 15 are participating and validating entities, among which ARTICA INGENIERÍA E INNOVACIÓN S.L (artica+i) would contribute with complementary engineering and innovation management activities. It also has the support of 9 strategic public-private entities aligned with the project’s theme, including FIAB, FEV, Cámara de Álava, Ayto de Alcobendas (Madrid), Ayto de Málaga, Cluster Food Service, Inlac, Innovacc and PTV.
The submission of the National Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan by the Spanish Government to Brussels before 30 April 2021 is expected to contain this IDM, aligned with the objectives of the NGEU that aim to transform our economy into a sustainable, digital, inclusive and socially and territorially structured economy.
