We sponsor the SALINA Master’s Awards to promote food engineering and innovation

For the first time, we have sponsored the Award for the Master’s in Food Engineering Applied to Health (SALINA) at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. At artica+i, we proudly took on the challenge of serving as a jury to evaluate the TFM proposals presented—all of which were of a high academic and research level—because this support represents a step forward in our commitment to academic and training institutions in the field of food engineering, one of our main areas of activity.

On September 27th, the SALINA Master’s Awards ceremony took place, recognizing the best Final Master’s Projects (TFM) from the 2023/2024 class, which, for the first time, have been sponsored by artica+i. The event, held at the Higher Technical School of Agricultural, Food, and Biosystems Engineering (ETSIAAB) of UPM, included the participation of our Business Development Director, Fernando Boned, who presented this recognition to the three best TFM, based on criteria of applicability in the food industry, relevance and timeliness of the chosen topic, methodological approach, and results achieved.

This is the first year we have sponsored these Awards, which we consider to be of great interest, as it is a new initiative within our social commitment to supporting academic and training institutions closely linked to our field of activity. It also allows us to identify talent and explore new research lines with strong applicability in the food industry.

These Awards have included financial and material prizes, and we hope to continue supporting the efforts of future students in this Master’s in Food Engineering Applied to Health at UPM in future editions.

The 2024 SALINA Winners

A jury composed of professionals from artica+i, both from the Engineering and Innovation Consulting fields, evaluated the works, highlighting “the high academic and research level of the SALINA Master’s students,” as stated by Fernando Boned. The three winners were:

  • First prize: for the project titled “Characterization of oat pulp for its subsequent use in the production of gluten-free functional foods for the celiac population,” supervised by Ms. Maylis Renard.
  • Honorable mention: for the project titled “In vitro and in vivo study of the possible anti-inflammatory effect at the liver level of a supplement enriched in milk fat globule membrane,” supervised by Ms. Elena Larraona Sánchez.
  • Honorable mention: for the project titled “Isolation and characterization of non-Saccharomyces yeasts for the production of alternative beers,” authored by Mr. Pablo Mendoza Orbaneja.

Each of these TFMs was supervised by various professors from the SALINA Master’s program at ETSIAAB-UPM, as well as professionals from other collaborating entities such as ICTAN-CSIC, CIAL-CSIC, or IMDEA FOOD, among others.

SALINA: Future professionals in nutrition, health, and food technology

The Higher Technical School of Agricultural, Food, and Biosystems Engineering (ETSIAAB) of UPM, in collaboration with the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (INEF) and the Institute of Educational Sciences (ICE), are the organizers of the Master’s in Food Engineering Applied to Health (SALINA), which in 2023-2024 has reached its 9th edition. This is an innovative degree aimed at training highly qualified professionals in the fields of food industry, nutrition, and health.

This program is designed to equip students with skills in management, research, and consultancy within the food sector, aiming to improve industrial processes, design new food products, and optimize nutrition and health standards in food production. Additionally, it offers a solid foundation for those wishing to pursue further research through a PhD.

The main objectives of the master’s program include providing multidisciplinary training in food and health, fostering coordination between universities, research centers, and companies in the sector, and preparing professionals to take on key roles in driving innovation in this field.

Without a doubt, this Master’s program responds to the demands of both the private and public sectors, training professionals to meet the challenges imposed by European regulations and contributing to the technological advancement of the country, especially within the food industry, with its stringent requirements in sustainability, quality, and food safety.

For artica+i, it is also important to express our gratitude for the opportunity provided by the Master’s Management team to sponsor this annual Award, and we look forward to seeing it grow and generate value among the future professionals who will lead Spain’s food industry in the coming years.
