Second call for Interreg Euro-MED
The deadline for submitting applications for the second call of Interreg Euro-MED will remain open until 27 October. This is an aid programme for international cooperation initiatives in the Mediterranean area that contribute to mitigating and combating the effects of climate change.
Our International R&D&I Project Funding team has experience in this type of calls for proposals, providing support in all phases of the project: from the design and definition of the proposal to its subsequent monitoring and technical-economic justification.
From 27 June to 27 October 2022 at 13:00 (Brussels time), the second call for grants under the Interreg Euro-MED Programme will remain open. This initiative supports cooperation projects related to climate change and the environment in the Mediterranean area.
The programme, which has a budget of €294 million for the period 2021-2027, brings together partners from 69 regions in 14 countries on the northern shore of the Mediterranean with a common goal: a climate-neutral and resilient society.
Interreg Euro-MED thus provides funding for projects in line with the priorities and specific objectives set by the European Commission. Specifically, four missions have been identified that frame the objectives of the projects supported by the Programme: “Sustainable and innovative economy”, “Natural heritage”, “Liveable green areas” and “Sustainable tourism”.
Specific priorities and objectives
Of the numerous funding priorities and specific objectives proposed by the European Commission for the period 2021-2027, Interreg Euro-MED has selected the following three as priorities: “A Smarter Mediterranean”, “A Greener Mediterranean” and “Mediterranean Governance”.
Thus, the currently open call is addressed to thematic projects focusing on the first two priorities of the Programme and their related specific objectives:
- A Smarter Mediterranean
- 1.1″Developing and improving research and innovation capacities and the uptake of advanced technologies”.
- A Greener Mediterranean
- 2.6 “Promote the transition towards a resource efficient and circular economy”. 2.7 “Promote the transition towards a resource efficient and circular economy”.
- 2.4 “Promote climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention and resilience, taking into account ecosystems”.
- 2.7 “Enhance the protection and conservation of nature, biodiversity and green infrastructure, including in urban areas, and reduce all forms of pollution”.
3 project types
In addition, this second call focuses on three types of project:
- Study Projects: conduct analyses to better address a thematic issue and open the door to the development of new instruments, policies, strategies and action plans.
- Test Projects: test common instruments, policies, strategies and action plans already developed to validate concrete solutions to be transferred.
- Transfer Projects: optimise and share the validated common tools, policies, strategies and action plans for adoption by stakeholders.
Initiatives submitted as Study Projects must have a maximum budget of €600,000 and a total implementation period of 27 months. In the case of Test Projects, these will be initiatives with budgets of no more than €3M and an implementation period of 33 months. Finally, the initiatives framed as Transfer Projects will have a budget limitation of €1M and 27 months for their execution. In all cases, the start date of the proposed activities must be 1 May 2023.
The Programme’s contribution to the approved projects will be in the form of a grant from European funds (80%). The remaining 20% will have to be covered by each partner from its own funds or other national grants.
As a minimum, the consortium must be composed of organisations based in five different countries of the Interreg Euro-MED cooperation area, with the leader being a public entity. In addition, at least two partners must be based in a European region of the Cooperation Programme and the private institutions participating in the project and based in IPA countries (Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance) must be non-profit entities.
Technical meetings
In order to support applicants in the preparation of their project proposals, Interreg Euro-MED has organised a series of technical meetings over the coming months. These meetings will serve to clarify doubts and provide some advice for the proposals to be submitted in this second call:
- 8 September 2022: “Development of your work plan and mandatory activities”.
- 22 September 2022: “Drawing up your budget / Eligibility of expenses”.
- 6 October 2022: “Questions and answers”.
Our Interreg experience
From the Innovation Consultancy area, our International Project Finance team has more than 10 years of experience in the management of international R&D&I grants in cooperation very similar to Interreg Euro-MED. Such is the case of the Interreg Sudoe Programme, which supports regional development in Southwest Europe, financing transnational projects through the ERDF Fund and whose next call is expected during the last quarter of this year 2022.
An example of this is the COPPEREPLACE project, currently underway. This is an initiative led by the Wine Technology Platform, which is working with 12 Spanish, French and Portuguese partners between November 2020 and February 2023. In addition, this international initiative has our support as the technical office of the project, participating not only in the design and definition phase of the proposal, but also in the current monitoring and technical-economic justification of COPPEREPLACE.
